Black Rod appointment

01 May 2009

Baroness Royall of Blaisdon, the Leader of the House of Lords, led tributes to Sir Michael Willcocks KCB CVO in the House of Lords upon his retirement as the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod.

This followed a formal announcement that Lieutenant-General Sir Freddie Viggers KCB CMG MBE had been appointed to the post of Black Rod.

The post of Black Rod combines security responsibilities with Royal and ceremonial/events duties within the House of Lords.
