Sir Anthony Clarke, the Master of the Rolls and Head of Civil Justice in England and Wales, will join the House of Lords as a life Peer.
Senior members of the judiciary can be appointed to the House of Lords as life Peers rather than Law Lords. As life Peers they have not been appointed to hear cases in the House of Lords in its capacity as the highest court.
The Law Lords will become Justices of the Supreme Court of the UK when the Supreme Court opens on 1 October 2009.
