Press Notice No 25

WELSH AFFAIRS COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN RESPONDS TO WELSH ASSEMBLY GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT ON NORTH WALES NEUROSCIENCES SERVICES

The Welsh Affairs Committee Chairman, Dr Hywel Francis MP, today said:

“I warmly welcome the decision announced today by the Welsh Assembly Health Minister Edwina Hart that neurology patients in North Wales will continue to receive treatment at the Walton Centre in Liverpool. I am pleased that the Health Minister has accepted the recommendations of James Steers, who carried out an independent review of neurosciences services for Welsh patients.

“The announcement today comes a week after the Welsh Affairs Committee published our interim report on the provision of cross-border health services, in which we said that the provision of excellent health services as close to home as possible is vital for the well-being of patients. I am pleased that First Minister Rhodri Morgan welcomed our report as constructive. The Committee’s intention in publishing an interim report was to contribute in a timely and helpful way to the current discussions on health services in Wales.”

Ends.
