Forthcoming meetings of the Treasury Committee & Treasury Sub-committee

SCRUTINY OF HM TREASURY DEPARTMENTS & AGENCIES/MONETARY POLICY

SCRUTINY SESSIONS

The Committee and Sub-committee have arranged meetings with the Treasury and other departments and bodies linked to the Treasury to discuss a range of issues relating to their work and administration. The sessions will be broadly linked to their Departmental Reports and other departmental publications; but other current issues will be raised such as (in the case of HM Revenue & Customs) the progress of the merger of the two former revenue departments.

Brief submissions ahead of all these meetings from outside bodies or individuals are welcome. Evidence submitted may include material not written specifically for the Committee.  Letters or submissions in hard copy should be sent to the Clerk of the Committee, Treasury Committee, House of Commons Committee Office,  7 Millbank, London SW1P 3JA. However, it would be most helpful to the Committee to receive submissions in electronic format: these should be sent by e-mail to [email protected] (with a covering letter confirming that it is intended as evidence to be submitted to the Treasury Committee).

Any material should be received at least 10 days before the meeting concerned.

At 2.30pm public: Statistics Commission-Annual Report 2004-05 (Professor David Rhind, Chairman)

Tuesday 8 November (main Committee)

At 10.00am public: The Financial Services Authority (Sir Callum McCarthy, Chairman and Mr John Tiner, Chief Executive) 

Wednesday 9 November (Sub-committee)

At 2.30pm public: Office of National Statistics-Annual Report and Accounts 2004-05 (Ms Karen Dunnell, new appointee, National Statistician)

Wednesday 16 November (Sub-committee)

At 2.30pm public: HM Treasury-Departmental Report 2005 (Mr Nicholas Macpherson, Permanent Secretary)

MONETARY POLICY

The Treasury Committee is resuming the practice of scrutinising the work of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England, through appointment hearings for members of the MPC and through evidence sessions with the MPC following the publication of the Bank of England's Quarterly Inflation Report.

Accordingly the following meetings have been arranged:

Thursday 13 October              

At 11.45 am public: Appointment hearings with Mr David Walton (appointed to the MPC on 1 July 2005) and Mr Paul Tucker (re-appointed to the MPC on 1 June 2005)

Thursday 24 November

At 11.45 am public: Bank of England November Inflation Report (The Governor of the Bank of England and members of the Monetary Policy Committee)

All meetings will be preceded by a private deliberative meetings of the Committee to which the press and public will not be admitted. Meetings may be subject to last minute changes. Meeting will be held in a Committee Room of the House of Commons or Portcullis House. Those wishing to attend meetings should check the venue by contacting the House of Commons Public Information Office on 020 7219 4272 on the day before the hearing.
