Treasury Committee Press Notice No. 41

Session 2003-04 22 July 2004

EU and Financial Services

The Treasury Committee will be holding the following meeting, at which oral evidence will be taken from witnesses indicated.

Thursday 16 September

at 9.30 am:

Mr Callum McCarthy (Chairman) and Mr John Tiner (Chief Executive), Financial Services Authority

This meeting will be preceded by a private deliberative meeting of the Committee to which the press and public will not be admitted.  Meetings may be subject to last minute changes or addition of witnesses. This meeting will be held in a Committee Room of the House of Commons or Portcullis House.  Those wishing to attend the meeting should check the venue by contacting the House of Commons Public Information Office on 020 7219 4272 on the day before the hearing.

This meeting is to discuss developments in respect of existing and proposed EU legislation and activity in the field of financial services. This will include the progress of the Financial Services Action Plan, and ideas for future action identified in the May 2004 Report from the EU Financial Services Committee (FSC) on Financial Integration (FSC 4156/04).

The meeting is intended to inform the House of developments in this area ahead of the proposed debate on the Financial Services Committee's Report on Financial Integration, recommended by the House of Commons European Scrutiny Committee. Such a debate would take place in a Standing Committee, ahead of consideration of the FSC Report at an ECOFIN Council later in this year.

Accordingly, the Committee would welcome brief submissions from interested parties on the work of the EU in the field of financial services (including, for example, observations on the way in which relevant EU Directives have been implemented in the UK). Submissions are preferred in electronic format by e-mail to [email protected] (attached to covering message confirming that it is evidence to be submitted to the Treasury Committee); alternatively they may be sent in hard copy to the Committee Assistant, Treasury Committee, Committee Office (address above). They should be received by Monday 6 September.

The Treasury Committee is a Select Committee of the House of Commons, appointed to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Treasury, the Inland Revenue, Customs and Excise and associated public bodies. All Members of the Committee are Members of the Sub-committee.
