EMBARGO: FOR INFORMATION UNTIL 11.00AM WEDNESDAY 25 JUNE 2003
PRESS NOTICE: Publication of Report
LOCAL ROADS AND PATHWAYS
The Transport Committee’s Fourth Report of the 2002-03 Session, on
Local Roads and Pathways (HC 407-I), will be published on
Wednesday 25 June at 11.00am at a Press Conference at 11.00am in Committee Room 16.
Roads and pathways form a part of every single journey we make every day. They are the public service that is used most frequently and used by everyone. This report presents the findings of the Committee's investigation into:
Investment in maintenance;
Local authority performance;
Government plans to tackle the problem; and
Whether the Government is likely to meet its targets to improve the roads.
Utility companies carry out over 1.8 million road works every year. The Committee also investigated their contribution to the network of patched up road and footpath surfaces seen in many areas, in particular:
The standard of repairs by utilities;
The failure of current legislation to reduce disruption;
The Government's proposals to improve co-ordination and reduce delays; and
'Congestion Tsars' for cities.
Advance copies of the Report will be available under embargo on Tuesday 24 June in the Press Gallery from 11.00 am, and to witnesses and other media from 11.00 am to 12 noon from the Transport Committee Office, 7 Millbank, London, SW1P 3JA. Witness copies not collected by 12 noon will be posted first class.
