ORAL EVIDENCE SESSION ON WEDNESDAY 17 MAY 2006

Inquiry into Export Credits Guarantee Department's bribery rules

The Sub-Committee appointed by the Trade and Industry Select Committee will meet on Wednesday 17 May in Committee Room 16, House of Commons, to take oral evidence on the Export Credits Guarantee Department's new bribery rules.

9.30 am Confederation of British Industry and the British Exporters Association:

Andy Scott, Director of International and UK Operations, CBI, James Caldwell, Chairman of CBI Export Finance Committee Clive Jones, member of CBI Export Finance Committee and a member of British Exporters Association's Council, and Sue Walton, Chairman of the British Exporters Association

10.15 am Transparency International (UK) and The Corner House

Neill Stansbury, Project Director Construction and Engineering, TI(UK), Graham Rodmell, Director Corporate and Regulatory Affairs, TI(UK) and Kirstine Drew, The Corner House

The Sub-Committee is focusing on two areas:

  • Do the procedures published on 16 March 2006 in the Government's "Final Response to the Export Credit Guarantee Department's consultation on the changes made to its anti-bribery and corruption procedures in December 2004" reduce as far as reasonably practical the risk of ECGD supporting contracts tainted by corruption?

  • Are the proposals set out in the Final Response workable?

The Chairman of the Sub-Committee, Roger Berry MP, said:

"The anti-bribery procedures which the Government published on 16 March 2006 have had a long, and at times a controversial, gestation since April 2004. It is vital for both business and the tax-payer that the new procedures are workable and reduce to a minimum the risk of ECGD supporting contracts tainted by corruption."

It is expected that one further oral evidence on this inquiry will be held on 7 June.

Members of the Sub-Committee:

Mr Roger Berry MP ( Lab, Kingswood)
Rob Marris MP ( Lab, Wolverhampton South West)
Mrs Claire Curtis-Thomas MP ( Lab, Crosby)
Mr Mike Weir MP ( SNP, Angus)
Judy Mallaber MP ( Lab, Amber Valley)

For further information about the inquiry please call the Committee Office on 020 7219 5779.
