PUBLICATION OF REPORTS

1.    The Work of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council

The Science and Technology Committee will publish its First Report of Session 2002-03, The Work of the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (HC 161), at 1100 hours on Tuesday 17 December 2002. 

The Report considers the current and future work and performance of PPARC.  The Committee is undertaking a rolling programme of scrutiny sessions with each of the seven Research Councils over the course of the Parliament, in pursuance of its remit to scrutinise the work of the Office of Science and Technology and its associated public bodies.  PPARC was the first Research Council to be looked at.  The Report follows an oral evidence with PPARC in July and the submission of subsequent written evidence.

Copies of the Report will be available to the press and to those who gave evidence to the inquiry from Reception, 7 Millbank, at 1100 on Tuesday 17 December. No embargoed copies will be issued. 

2.    Government Response to the Committee's Report on Government Funding of the Scientific Learned Societies

The Committee will publish its First Special Report of Session 2002-03 at 0900 on Monday 16 December 2002.  The Report contains the Responses of the Government, the Royal Society and the Royal Academy of Engineering to the Committee's Fifth Report of Session 2002-03 on Government Funding of the Scientific Learned Societies. 

Copies of both these Reports can be obtained from the date of publication from TSO outlets and from the Parliamentary Bookshop, 12 Bridge Street, Parliament Square, London SW1A 2JX (020 7219 3890) by quoting House of Commons paper No. 507.  The text of the Reports will also be available on the Committee's internet homepage: www.parliament.uk/commons/selcom/s&thome.htm

1.    Under the terms of Standing Order No. 152 the Committee is empowered to examine the "expenditure, policy and administration of the Office of Science and Technology and its associated public bodies". The Committee was appointed on 12 November 2001.

3.    First Special Report: The Fifth Report, Session 2001-02, on Government Funding of the Scientific Learned Societies, HC 774-I, was published on 1 August 2002.
