Regulatory Reform Committee

Session 2003-04        13 July 2004

Publication of Report

Draft Regulatory Reform (Local Commissioner for Wales) Order 2004

The Committee has considered the draft Regulatory Reform (Local Commissioner for Wales) Order 2004, which the Government has amended in line with an earlier Committee recommendation, and has recommended unanimously to the House that it be approved.

The draft Order would remove the present restriction in law which prevents the Welsh Administration Ombudsman from undertaking investigations as a Local Commissioner of the Commission for Local Authorities in Wales.  The Government intends that the draft Order should be an interim step on the road to the eventual establishment of a Welsh Ombudsman’s office, able to investigate complaints across the range of public services in Wales.

The Committee has repeated the recommendation of its previous report that the Government should include a Public Services Ombudsman (Wales) Bill in its legislative programme for the 2004-05 Session.

The Committee’s full report will be published as its Tenth Report of the current Session at 2.00 pm on Thursday 15 July. It will be available from all Stationery Office outlets (Ref HC 900).
