TARGET LIST REVEALS PRIME MINISTER'S PRIORITIES

PASC PUBLISHES TARGETS WORK PROGRAMME FOR DELIVERY UNIT

The problems of lone parents, the renewal of rundown neighbourhoods and the push for sustainable farming are now among the top domestic priorities for the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit, according to a new list of government targets published today.  The list has been provided to PASC-the House of Commons Public Administration Select Committee-for its inquiry into government targets and league tables. It shows where the Unit is concentrating its efforts as it moves to ensure better public services by chasing progress across Whitehall.

The Delivery Unit was set up in 2001 to focus on the most important areas for public service performance. In the first year, these were health, education, transport and Home Office targets, but the Unit's remit was widened in summer 2002. Today's document, sent by Professor Michael Barber, Chief Adviser at the Unit, shows for the first time the new domestic issues it is now tackling in addition to the existing priorities including hospital waiting times, street crime and asylum.  The operation of the Criminal Justice system by the Lord Chancellor's Department and Crown Prosecution Service is another prime target for the Unit, with special pressure also to increase the take-up of sporting opportunities by schoolchildren.

Commenting today, Committee Chairman Tony Wright MP said:

"I welcome the fact that the Delivery Unit has responded to our request to make public the priorities set for it by the Prime Minister.

"It is right that Parliament and the public should know which public services are the focus of special attention.  This kind of openness will help to ensure that there is a mature and informed debate about the direction public services should take".

Attached is the list of targets on which the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit is working.
