WASTE MANAGEMENT IN NORTHERN IRELAND
NEW INQUIRY BY SUB-COMMITTEE
The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee has decided that the Sub-committee will conduct an inquiry into the implementation of the Waste Management Strategy for Northern Ireland. Its primary concern is to examine progress in meeting the targets as set out in the EC Waste Framework Directive. Within this overriding objective the Sub-committee will examine the following issues:
action to reduce the amount of household waste sent to landfill in line with the requirements of the EC Waste Framework Directive;
progress on recycling in Northern Ireland and the potential development of the recycling industry here;
the current and future availability of landfill capacity in Northern Ireland;
illegal dumping of waste;
proposals for alternatives to landfill such as incineration; and
the potential to learn from experience elsewhere.
The Sub-Committee may also choose to examine other associated issues which arise in the course of the inquiry.
The Sub-Committee wishes to invite any individual or organisation with an interest in this matter to submit written evidence. This should be addressed to the Clerk of the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee, 7 Millbank, House of Commons, London SW1P 3JA and should arrive no later than 10.00 am on Friday 23 April 2004.
Individuals or organisations are requested to submit memoranda (guideline length up to six A4 pages) in a Word file on computer disk or by e-mail to [email protected] with a single additional hard copy in the post; those without access to a computer are respectfully requested to take particular care that submissions are legible. Memoranda submitted to the Committee should be kept confidential until published by the Committee.
