Remit - Development Aid

The EU spends over 8 Billion Euros a year on Development Aid. While the majority of this is channelled through the EU budget, around 2.4 Billion Euros a year depends on Member State contributions to the European Development Fund (EDF), which is allocated specifically to projects in under-developed African, Caribbean and Pacific countries. The EU is also seeking to play a role in co-ordinating Member States’ national development policies to ensure the most effective use of limited resources.

The Committee recently published an extensive Report on management of EU Development Aid. The Committee has scrutinised a number of contentious EU proposals for allocating EDF funds towards the Peace Facility for Africa, and for bringing the EDF into the main EU budget lines (‘budgetisation’).
