JCHR Press Notice No. 25

Session 2002-03                                            20 November 2003

Notice of public evidence session

On 30 October the Government announced its intention to establish a new body with responsibilities for supporting equality legislation and promoting human rights.  It has been given the "working title" of the Commission for Equality and Human Rights.

The Chair of the Joint Committee on Human Rights, the Rt Hon Jean Corston MP, welcomed the Government's announcement, which is in line with the recommendations made in the Committee's Sixth Report of Session 2002-03, The Case for a Human Rights Commission.

The Committee will be looking at the details of the implementation of the Government's decision over the next few months.  On 8 December it will take evidence from the Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs, Lord Falconer of Thoroton, on these and related matters.

The public evidence session will be on 8 December at 4.30 pm in Committee Room 3 of the House of Lords.
