The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
The Tenth Report from the Joint Committee on Human Rights, on The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child will be published on Tuesday 24 June 2003, at 00.01, as HL Paper 117/HC 81. Advance copies will be available to the press and other media, witnesses, etc from the Main Committee Office, House of Commons, from 12 noon to 3 pm on Monday 23 June.
The Report takes as its starting point the Concluding Observations of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on the second periodic report under the Convention from the UK Government. That report was submitted in 1999, and the UN Committee's Concluding Observations were issued in October 2002.
The Joint Committee on Human Rights considers the implementation and dissemination in the UK of the Convention's principles and obligations, and the Government's response to the recommendations of the UN Committee.
It is intended to be the first in a series of annual examinations of the UK's record in relation to the main international human rights instruments.
In May, the Committee published its Ninth Report on The Case for a Children's Commissioner for England.
The report will be available from The Stationery Office (tel: 0870 600 5522), TSO shops, The Parliamentary Bookshop, 12 Bridge Street, London SW1A 2JX (tel 020 7219 3890) and will be on the Committee's website at the address below on the day of publication.
