Child Poverty Bill

The Joint Committee on Human Rights is considering the compatibility of the Child Poverty Bill with the UK's human rights obligations. The Committee's scrutiny of Bills for compatibility with the requirements of human rights law includes consideration of whether the Bill presents an opportunity to enhance human rights in the UK.

The Committee regards the Bill as a human rights enhancing measure, because it provides a mechanism for the progressive realisation of children's right to an adequate standard of living in Article 27 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and Article 11 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. However, the Committee has a number of questions about the Bill to which it is seeking answers from the Government (See letter to Stephen Timms MP, below)
