International Development Committee discusses Scottish aid programme with Scottish Executive and Committee of MSPs
The International Development Committee of the House of Commons travels to Edinburgh today for the first time to discuss overseas development assistance with the Scottish Executive and a committee of MSPs. This is the first such visit by the Committee. In the light of Scotland's rising aid budget-now up to £4.5 million a year-the Committee decided that this would be an opportune moment to discuss areas of shared interest with the new administration and with the newly appointed European and External Relations Committee of the Scottish Parliament. The Committee will also visit DFID's offices in East Kilbride, where over 500 DFID staff are based.
Malcolm Bruce MP, Chairman of the International Development Committee and MP for Gordon, said
"We are delighted to be able to come to Edinburgh so early in this new Scottish Parliament to discuss areas of shared interest with the new administration and our counterpart committee. DFID's offices in East Kilbride mean that Scotland is the base for a large part of the UK's international development direction and support. The people of Scotland have long demonstrated a deep and abiding commitment to delivering effective aid and development. There is a strong Scottish engagement in the delivery of UK aid and development and the transfer of key posts from London to Scotland appears to have been a success."
On 27 June, the Committee will meet a cross-section of Scottish international development NGOs and then go on to meet Linda Fabiani, Minister for Europe, External Affairs and Culture, before a meeting with the European and External Relations Committee of the Scottish Parliament. The following morning will be spent at the DFID offices at East Kilbride.
The membership of the Committee is as follows: Malcolm Bruce MP (Chairman, Lib Dem), John Battle MP (Lab), John Bercow MP (Con), Hugh Bayley MP (Lab), Richard Burden MP (Lab), Mr Quentin Davies MP (Con), James Duddridge MP (Con), Ann McKechin MP (Lab), Joan Ruddock MP (Lab), Mr Marsha Singh MP (Lab), Sir Robert Smith MP (Lib Dem).
