Conference of EU Development and Cooperation Committee Chairmen
As part of the UK’s presidency of the EU, the International Development Committee (House of Commons), chaired by Malcolm Bruce MP, and the EU Sub-Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Development Policy (House of Lords), chaired by Lord Bowness, will be hosting a Conference of the Chairmen of Development and Cooperation Committees of the Member States of the European Union, the European Parliament and the Parliaments of the Candidate States. The Conference will take place today,
Monday 28 November, in the Palace of Westminster.
The Conference comes at the end of a year that has been an important one for development. A series of major meetings have taken place and the fight against global poverty has been at the centre of international debate.
The Conference will continue the focus on development policy and will be addressed by:
Commissioner Louis Michel, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, on ‘The development policy of the European Union’
Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for International Development, UK on ‘The UK’s Presidency of the EU and the next steps forward’. This speech will be made available during the afternoon of Monday 28 November, on DFID’s website:
The Conference will also feature debates on:
‘Migration and Development’ with guest speaker: Mr L. Alan Winters, Chair of the Migration Working Group, World Bank and the Rt Hon John Battle MP, member of the International Development Committee, House of Commons
‘Current development issues, with particular reference to Africa’ with guest speaker: Myles Wickstead, formerly Head of Secretariat to the Commission for Africa
