Press Notice No 17, Session 2003 - 04

Kenya: DFID’s Country Assistance Plan 2004-07 and progress towards the Millennium Development Goals

The International Development Committee agreed to hold an oral evidence session  - announced in a press notice dated 4 February 2004 (PN10.2003/04) - looking at Kenya: DFID’s Country Assistance Plan 2004-07 and progress towards the Millennium Development Goals. The Committee also invited submissions of written evidence.

The following evidence session has now been arranged:

Date and venue - Wednesday 24 March, Palace of Westminster

Time - 6.00 p.m.

Witnesses - Rt Hon Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for International Development, and Mr Matthew Wyatt, Head of the Department for International Development (DFID) Kenya.

Background Information: On 12 January 2004, the Department for International Development (DFID) published its draft Country Assistance Plan for Kenya for 2004-07.

This is available at: http://62.190.2.12/Pubs/files/cap_kenya_draft.pdf

The draft Country Assistance Plan outlines the challenges which Kenya faces, its Government’s response, and what the UK (DFID) intends to do to support the Government of Kenya’s development strategy.

Also in January 2004, the International Development Committee visited Kenya in order to gain a better understanding of the country’s progress, or lack of it, towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and to investigate the contribution made by DFID in this regard.

During the visit the Committee decided to hold a short inquiry into DFID’s Country Assistance Plan 2004-07 for Kenya and the country’s progress towards the MDGs. The intention is that

the Committee’s inquiry will inform DFID’s work in Kenya, and provide a platform for organisations with expertise, experience and views about DFID’s plans, to make their views known to the UK Parliament.

The forthcoming oral evidence will address the following questions:

• What are the prospects of Kenya meeting the MDGs?

• What are the main challenges which Kenya faces in meeting the MDGs?

• To what extent does DFID’s Country Assistance Plan identify accurately the challenges which Kenya faces, and outline appropriate strategies to help Kenya to make faster progress towards the MDGs?
