European Scrutiny Committee Press Notice 6

31 March 2009

PUBLICATION OF THE COMMITTEE'S FOURTEENTH REPORT OF 2008-09

'Free movement of workers in the EU'

The European Scrutiny Committee will publish its Fourteenth Report of Session 2008-09, 'Free movement of workers in the EU' on 1 April at 11.00 am. The Committee has been scrutinising a report from the European Commission on the movement to the UK of workers from countries which joined the EU in 2006 and from Bulgaria and Romania, which joined in 2007

Committee Chairman Michael Connarty MP said:

"The free flow of people from across Europe, particularly those seeking employment is a key issue in a time of economic slow-down. I think the evidence of the two Ministers sets out a clearer picture of the movements around Europe and particularly into the UK. I would hope that many MPs will now take the opportunity to get behind the rhetoric and debate the issue when the meeting date and time is fixed."

On 4 February, in its Seventh Report of Session 2008-09, the Committee commented on the Communication and announced that it would invite oral evidence about the document and the Posting of Workers Directive from Lord Mandelson, the Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, and Mr. Phil Woolas, the Minister of State for Borders and Immigration.

The report and the transcripts of the evidence sessions will now provide the papers for a session of the European Committee to which the ESC has referred the topic for a public debate. The European committee to which it will be referred will be open to any and all MPs to attend and take part in questioning the government minister and speaking on the topic.

Lord Mandelson and Mr. Woolas gave their evidence on 9 and 11 March. The full transcript of what they said is annexed to the Committee's Fourteenth Report. The Committee has recommended that the issues raised by the Commission's Communication should now be debated by European Committee B.
