UK Preparations for the World Summit
on Sustainable Development:
Jonathon Porritt CBE to give oral evidence
Further to Press Release No.14, the EAC is pleased to announce that Jonathon Porritt CBE, the Chairman of the Sustainable Development Commission will give oral evidence to the Committee on Wednesday 6 March at 11.00 am.
This will be Mr Porritt's first appearance before a select committee since he was appointed as Chairman in July 2000. It presents a timely opportunity to hear the Commission's views on the UK's progress towards sustainable development and the levels of public awareness of the concept.
The Committee will also be examining the following in the course of this inquiry:
Monday 4 March
4.20pm Rt Hon. John Prescott MP, Deputy Prime Minister and First Secretary of State
Wednesday 6 March
9.30am Rt Hon.Clare Short MP, Secretary of State for International Development
Wednesday 20 March
4.20pm Rt Hon. Margaret Beckett, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
These sessions will be open to the public on a first come, first served basis. They will take place in Committee Room 20 but this is subject to change. Please confirm these details closer to the meeting by telephoning the Committee Information Line on 020 7219 2033.

2. The Sustainable Development Commission is an advisory Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) which was set up by the Prime Minister in October 2000. It has 24 members (including the Chairman) from all parts of the UK and from all sectors of society. The Commission's role is to advocate sustainable development across all sectors in the UK, review progress towards it and build consensus on the actions needed if further progress is to be achieved.
