Greening Government:  the 2004 Sustainable Development in Government Report

In terms of environmental management, the performance of departments has not substantially improved.  There continue to be significant variations between departments and in some respects performance has actually deteriorated.  This was the key conclusion of the report published today by the Environmental Audit Committee in its First Report of 2005-06, Greening Government:  the 2004 Sustainable Development in Government Report, HC 698.

This constitutes the sixth report which the Environmental Audit Committee (EAC) has published on Greening Government, and it includes a history of the initiative.   It is based on a briefing provided by the National Audit Office and published with the report.
The briefing examines the Government's Sustainable Development in Government:  Third Annual Report  (November 2004) and the extent to which findings have changed from those reached by the EAC and NAO in analysing previous reports.

The Committee fully endorses the NAO's conclusions and recommendations.  It is particularly concerned about departmental progress against carbon reduction targets as emissions from civil departments (excluding the Ministry of Defence) have risen by 11% since 2000.   This mirrors the difficulties now facing the Government in achieving the challenging UK wide carbon reduction targets it has set itself and it is particularly worrying that the trajectory is going so dramatically in the wrong direction.

Copies of the report can be obtained from TSO outlets and from the Parliamentary Bookshop, 12 Bridge Street, Parliament Square, London SW1A 2JX (020 7219 3890) by quoting House of Commons No. 528.   The text of the Report will also be available from approximately 3.30pm onwards on its publication date, on the Committee's Internet homepage

For further information on the report, journalists may phone the former Chairman of the EAC, Peter Ainsworth, on 07887 997838, or Committee staff (Eric Lewis) on 07952 669842
