14 July 2005 New Environmental Audit Committee Set Up

Yesterday, Wednesday 13 July 2005, the House of Commons appointed the membership of the Environmental Audit Committee. That membership is as follows:

Lynne Featherstone MP (Liberal Democrat, Hornsey and Wood Green)
David Howarth MP (Liberal Democrat, Cambridge)

At its first meeting on Thursday 14 July 2005, the Committee unanimously elected Mr Peter Ainsworth MP to serve as Chairman.

Under the terms of the Standing Order No. 152A, the Environmental Audit Committee is appointed to "consider to what extent the policies and programmes of government departments and non-departmental public bodies contribute to environmental protection and sustainable development: to audit their performance against such targets as may be set for them by Her Majesty's Ministers; and to report thereon to the House."

The Committee will issue further press releases following its next meeting on Wednesday 20th July, outlining its programme of future work.
