17 March 2004 Climate change and water security: new inquiry announced

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee has decided to undertake an inquiry into climate change and water security, flooding and related issues.

The terms of reference of the inquiry are:

"The Committee will conduct an inquiry into the likely implications of climate change for water policy in England. In particular, it will consider:

  • whether existing water supplies are adequate, and what additional sources of water might be needed

  • what will be the impact on resource management (and particularly the need for changes in irrigation and water conservation for agriculture)

  • the implications for flood management, investment in mitigation measures, and for wider policy such as planning, and

  • ways in which the impact of changes in water availability on biodiversity can be minimised."

The Committee invites all interested parties to submit written evidence which addresses these terms of reference. The deadline for the submission of evidence is Monday 19 April 2004.

Evidence should be submitted in Word or WordPerfect formats, and should be sent by e-mail to [email protected] The body of the e-mail must include a contact name, telephone number and postal address. The e-mail should also make clear who the submission is from.

Submissions should be as brief as possible, and certainly no more than 3,000 words. Paragraphs should be numbered for ease of reference, and the document should include a brief executive summary. Those submitting evidence are reminded that evidence should be original work, not previously published or circulated elsewhere. Once submitted no public use should be made of it, but those wishing to publish their evidence before it is published by the Committee are invited to contact the Clerk of the Committee to obtain permission to do so.
