OPPORTUNITY TO WORK FOR THE DEFENCE COMMITTEE
The Defence Committee has this week advertised for a Committee Specialist to join its permanent staff. The text of the advertisement is as follows:
Principally you will assist the Clerk and other Committee staff to conduct analysis in support of its inquiries by organising evidence, preparing briefing material and drafting reports. You will work closely the Members of Parliament and will occasionally accompany the Committee on UK and overseas visits. Good interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as is excellent written and spoken English. An understanding of the management and organisation of the MoD and Armed Forces is also a prerequisite, along with an up-to-date knowledge of the current emphases in the UK's defence policy.
You will need at least a second class honours degree or equivalent professional qualification in a relevant subject, as well as two years' relevant work experience.
Recent expertise in a particular area of defence or security policy would be an advantage, since you will work across a broad range of the Committee's remit. Ideally, you will also demonstrate a knowledge of relevant key networks, organisations and individuals in the UK and abroad, and an understanding of the opportunities and constraints affecting the development of Parliament's scrutiny role. Impartiality is a fundamental requirement for this post and you will not generally be given permission to participate in any political activity for the duration of this appointment.

The post is a two year fixed term appointment with the possibility of extension for a further one or two years and with a salary of £29,993-£38,030 per annum.
