Defence Committee Statement: Final Report on the Deepcut Investigation by Surrey Police

Defence Committee Statement: Final Report on the Deepcut Investigation by Surrey Police

Surrey Police today publish a report on wider issues arising from their investigations into the deaths of four soldiers at the Deepcut army barracks. We have been deeply concerned by these tragic deaths and have kept abreast of ongoing investigations. Surrey Police€™s report confirms that there are significant issues which require further investigation. We note that it calls for €˜a broader enquiry€™.

It would not have been appropriate for us to start an inquiry until the police had completed their investigations. With the conclusion of police investigations on this matter, we can now confirm that we will be conducting an inquiry.

We know that there have been calls for a public inquiry into the deaths at Deepcut and at other army training establishments. But it is not our job to question the findings of the police or of the coroner about how specific deaths occurred. A full statement outlining the remit of our inquiry will be available shortly, following further deliberations.
