Recruitment of Advisers
Recruitment of Advisers
APPOINTMENT OF SERVICE ADVISERS
The House of Commons Defence Committee is seeking specialist advisers with recent Service experience to assist it in its work of scrutinising the Ministry of Defence and Government Defence Policy.
The Defence Committee is a Select Committee of fourteen backbench Members of Parliament, appointed by the House of Commons and reflecting the balance of political parties in the House. Its responsibility is to monitor and to hold to account the Ministry of Defence and its associated public bodies, including the Armed Forces, on behalf of the House of Commons and the people who elect it.
The Committee has a panel of Specialist Advisers to assist it in its work, and has found it helpful to have an adviser from each of the three Services to provide firsthand knowledge and an understanding of the Service context. Advisers will work closely with committee staff in preparing briefing and papers for the Committee, and will be asked to give oral briefings at some Committee meetings. The work required can vary, according to the inquiries underway. Advisers are paid a modest fee for hours worked, plus travel expenses.
Suitable candidates will have served recently in the Armed Forces at a rank of one star or above, and have both operational and broad policy-making experience.
Prospective advisers are invited to put their names forward, together with a brief curriculum vitae, or statement of their suitability. It would be helpful to receive expressions of interest by Friday 22 September. These should be sent to the Clerk of the Committee by email to firstname.lastname@example.org or the postal address as above.
