Culture, Media and Sport Committee

Sixth Report

Caring for our Collections

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee will publish its Sixth Report, Caring for our Collections  (HC 176-1) at  00.01am on Monday 25 June 2007.

Advance copies of the Report for witnesses to the inquiry and for the media will be available from 12 noon on Friday 22 June under strict embargo from the Reception area at No.7 Millbank, and in the Press Gallery.

The report will also be available via the parliamentary website from 3pm on the day of publication.

The inquiry was announced by a press notice on 25 July 2006. It was announced as a sequel to the Committee’s recent inquiry and Third Report, Protecting and Preserving our Heritage (HC 912), which had concentrated on the historic environment, while the new inquiry would focus on museums and galleries, cultural property and archives, and the Committee was particularly interested in receiving evidence on the following issues:

  • Funding, with particular reference to the adequacy of the budget for museums, galleries and archives, and the impact of the London 2012 Olympics on Lottery funding for their sector;

  • Acquisition and disposal policies with particular reference to due diligence obligations on acquisition and legal restrictions on disposal of objects;

  • The remit and effectiveness of DCMS, the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and other relevant organisations in representing cultural interests inside and outside Government.
