National Audit Office: Improving corporate functions using shared services
A statement from Edward Leigh MP, Chairman of the Committee of Public Accounts:
As resources become ever tighter in the public sector so the case for sharing services across government becomes stronger. The Cabinet Office estimates that £1.4 billion a year could be saved by departments by sharing finance and human resource services alone. But today’s NAO report highlights that, due to government’s tardiness in adopting this proven approach to improving efficiency, it is some way from achieving this. Government must push to achieve efficiencies in this area and the money saved can be ploughed back into providing quality services for citizens.
