Visit to Stockport
Visit to Stockport
CLG Committee enjoys informative visit to Stockport
MPs from the Communities and Local Government Select Committee of the House of Commons visited Stockport on Monday this week (23.11.09) as part of their current inquiry into the delivery and future of the Government's Decent Homes Programme.
Speaking after the visit Dr Phyllis Starkey MP, Chair of CLG Committee said,
"We chose to come because Stockport Homes is a successful, high performing ALMO (arms length management organization) pioneering a range of innovative strategies to upgrade their social housing stock.
"Visits like this provide a vital perspective on much of the evidence we gather in the course of an inquiry. What we have seen and heard in meeting housing managers, tenants and others in Stockport will inform the report we will produce at the conclusion of our inquiry.
Talking about the visit Helen McHale, Chief Executive at Stockport Homes said, "We were delighted to be able to showcase the results of our programme by giving MPs first hand experience of the way tenants in Brinnington have benefited from having their homes refurbished."
Reflecting on this Dr Starkey added, "It has been heartening to encounter an organization that plans for the long term in the way it makes spending decisions today. We have been particularly impressed by the scope and impact of the procurement consortium GM Procure which has pioneered a successful model for regeneration activity that delivers training, creates local jobs and secures value for money."
Following their morning as guests of Stockport Homes and Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, MPs moved to Stockport Town Hall where the Committee held a formal meeting to take evidence from the National Federation of ALMOs, East Durham Homes, the Residential Landlords Association and Tony Crook, Professor of Housing Studies at the University of Sheffield.
