ENERGY MARKET INQUIRY:

COMMITTEE TO HEAR FROM INDUSTRIAL CONSUMERS OF ENERGY AND INDEPENDENT GENERATORS

The Business & Enterprise Committee today announces the second oral evidence session of its inquiry into the UK’s energy market. The Committee will be exploring, among other issues:

• The effect of rising energy costs on the international competitiveness of UK industry;

• Liquidity in the wholesale markets for electricity and gas;

• The effects of a potential takeover of British Energy by one of the ‘Big 6’ energy companies; and

• The case for a referral of the energy market to the Competition Commission.

The Chairman of the Business and Enterprise Committee, Peter Luff MP said: “ Consumers and businesses are becoming increasingly concerned about fuel costs, which are rising much faster than general inflation. We will be looking to see if the energy market is functioning effectively, and what more the regulators could or should be doing”.
