The Select Committee on the Inquiries Act 2005 was appointed on 16 May 2013. The Committee has to report by 28 February 2014.
In its report of 4 March 2013 the Liaison Committee recommended (paragraphs 56-60) the appointment of an ad hoc Select Committee to conduct post-legislative scrutiny of the Inquiries Act 2005. The report was agreed by the House on 21 March 2013.
Although the primary role of the Committee will be post-legislative scrutiny of the Inquiries Act 2005, the terms of reference agreed by the House on 16 May 2013 are rather wider; they are "to consider the law and practice relating to inquiries into matters of public concern, in particular the Inquiries Act 2005". This will allow the Committee to consider inquiries set up otherwise than under the Act, and to consider the advantages and disadvantages of using the provisions of the Act.
