Committee replies to Government responses on Gibraltar and Crown Dependencies reports

24 November 2017

The Lords EU Select Committee has written to the Government replying to the Government responses to two reports of the European Union Committee, Brexit: Gibraltar and Brexit: the Crown Dependencies.

The Committee received the responses on 30 October. The Committee wrote to the Government in reply on 22 November.

Brexit: Gibraltar

Background

Of all the British Overseas Territories, only Gibraltar is part of the EU and was therefore eligible to take part in the referendum of June 2016. 95.9% of votes cast in Gibraltar were for the UK to stay in the EU, by far the strongest vote for 'remain' of any area eligible to participate in the referendum. Yet the territory is now set to leave the EU along with the UK, and faces significant challenges as a result.

The Government of Gibraltar expressed their views on the Government response in a letter to the European Union Select Committee.

The Committee wrote to the Government in reply to the Government response on 22 November.

Brexit: the Crown Dependencies

Background

The Crown Dependencies are not part of the UK, nor are they included in the UK's membership of the EU. However, the Islands have a limited relationship with the EU that is set out in Protocol 3 to the UK's Act of Accession. As such, Brexit is set to bring an end to the Islands' relationship with the EU, at least in its current form.

The Committee wrote to the Government in reply to the Government response on 22 November.
