LORDS

Scrutiny Work

  • Introduction to scrutiny

In order to impact EU law-making at the earliest possible stage, the Committees scrutinise policy documents, such as Communications and White Papers, as well as proposed Directives and Regulations

  • UK opt-ins

The Committee has power to initiate a debate and vote on EU proposals subject to UK opt-in.

  • Correspondence with Ministers

The primary purpose of the Lords EU Select Committee is to scrutinise EU law in draft before the Government takes a position on it in the EU Council of Ministers. This scrutiny is carried out by each Sub-Committee through correspondence with Ministers

  • Subsidiarity

The Treaty of Lisbon gave national parliaments powers to raised concerns about the subsidiarity of proposals
