EU Strategy on Afghanistan

On 14 September 2017, the Committee considered the Joint Communication on Elements for an EU Strategy on Afghanistan.

The Committee decided to retain the item under scrutiny, and wrote to the Rt Hon Sir Alan Duncan MP. The Committee expressed its dissatisfaction with the content and analysis in the Explanatory Memorandum (EM) and requested further information. Questions included:

  • What the Government's assessment is of the proposed strategy in comparison to the 2014-2016 strategy;
  • If there are areas where the UK's priorities for the EU in Afghanistan are not consistent with the proposed strategy;
  • How the UK has embedded its approach to migration from Afghanistan into its wider bilateral work, and how the EU's approach complements the UK's; and
  • The type of co-operation the UK would consider continuing after it has left the EU.

The Committee cleared this document from scrutiny on 12 October 2017.
