European Union Stabilisation Action in Mopti and Segou

On 14 September 2017, the EU External Affairs Sub-Committee considered a Council Decision authorising a new European Union Stabilisation Action in Mopti and Segou, to assist the Malian authorities in returning civil administration to central Mali.

The Committee decided to retain the item under scrutiny and expressed its disappointment at the quality of the Explanatory Memorandum (EM) in a letter to the Rt Hon Sir Alan Duncan MP. The letter also raised a number of questions, including:

  • What the UK's objectives in the Sahel are, and how they will be met by the mission;
  • Whether the same challenges exist in both Mopti and Segou, and how the mission's activities will be divided between these two areas and Bamako;
  • By what date the mission will be operational; and
  • Whether any UK personnel will participate in the mission.

The Committee agreed to clear this document from scrutiny at its meeting on 12 October 2017.
