New items of scrutiny

Each sitting week the Chairman of the EU Select Committee sends items of scrutiny to the sub-committee for examination.

The Chairman recently sent the following documents to the Economic and Financial Affairs Sub-Committee for further scrutiny:

  • Report from the Commission to the European Parliament and the Council on the evaluation of the Union's finances based on the results achieved COM (2013) 461
  • Communication from the Commission to the European Parliament, the Council and the Court of Auditors: Synthesis of the Commission's management achievements in 2012 COM (2013) 334

For every EU proposal deposited in Parliament the Government publish an explanatory memorandum. These memoranda summarise the proposal and outline the Government’s position. They are one of the primary documents the EU committee and its sub-committees use to scrutinise the Government.

In a session of Parliament the Committee can receive around 800-1000 explanatory memoranda. In order to focus the work of the sub-committees the Chairman sifts through the memoranda and clears some from scrutiny and sends others to sub-committees for further scrutiny.
