Euro Area Crisis - Regular updates

Every six months, the EU Economic and Financial Affairs Sub-Committee holds a short series of evidence sessions exploring the ongoing euro area crisis. This allows the Sub-Committee to swiftly react to fast-moving events and involves taking evidence from prominent media experts, economists as well the Financial Secretary to the Treasury on the most salient issues at the time.

This culminates in a series of letters to the Financial Secretary to the Treasury, setting out the Sub-Committee’s reactions to the evidence heard. Issues that have previously been explored as part of this exercise include fiscal and banking union, Eurobonds, the impact of austerity and the ECB’s bond buying programme.
