EU Sub-Committee B - Internal Market, Infrastructure and Employment - Role

Internal Market, Infrastructure and Employment (EU Sub-Committee B) is one of the six sub-committees of the House of Lords European Union Select Committee.

The primary purpose of the Select Committee and its sub-committees is to scrutinise EU law in draft before it is agreed in the EU, in order to expose difficulties and propose improvements. This is carried out by each sub-committee through correspondence with Ministers, evidence sessions with Ministers, officials and stakeholders, and investigative inquiries.

Sub-Committee B scrutinises EU policy across a wide range of areas:

  • Employment and social affairs – including pensions, social security, health and safety, working conditions and equality;
  • Transport - including railways, shipping, aviation and internal market rules on motor vehicles;
  • Internal Market—including the actual or expected effect on UK businesses;
  • Infrastructure – including transport and telecoms networks;
  • Research and innovation; and
  • The digital single market.

At the start of the 2012-13 session, the European Union Select Committee agreed to a reconfiguration of the policy areas covered by each sub-committee. As a result, Sub-Committee B no longer scrutinises matters of energy policy; these are now overseen by the Sub-Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries, Environment & Energy (Sub-Committee D).
