Lord Browne of Madingley questioned on Future of Civil Service

This is the fourth session of the Public Administration Select Committee’s (PASC) inquiry into the Future of the Civil Service

The Committee will first take evidence from Lord Browne of Madingley, the Government’s Lead Non-Executive Director (and Lead Non-Executive Director at the Cabinet Office) on the role of non-executive directors on Whitehall departmental boards. In the second half of the session, the Committee will hear from former Cabinet Secretary and former Head of the Civil Service, Lord O’Donnell, about his experience of leading the Civil Service between 2005 and 2011.

Particular issues to be explored:

  • Current concerns about Civil Service competency;
  • Government proposals to improve the collection of management information in Whitehall; and
  • proposals to increase ministerial involvement in permanent secretary appointments.
