Wilson Room, Portcullis House

Witness

  • Professor Margaret Wilson, Former Speaker of the New Zealand House of Representatives

Background

Current UK political issues are mirrored in several aspects of New Zealand politics. For instance, the UK Cabinet Manual, recently published in draft, is modelled on a document which has been in use in New Zealand for several years.

In 1993 a referendum resulted in the adoption of a new voting system for general elections, and since 1996, no single party has held a majority in the New Zealand House of Representatives.
