Mapping the path to codifying - or not codifying - the UK's Constitution

Inquiry status: Oral evidence ongoing and further call for evidence announced

On 16 September 2010 the Committee launched an inquiry into Mapping the path to codifying - or not codifying - the UK's Constitution. So far the Committee has held four evidence sessions. Two considered examples of major constitutional changes that have taken place or are about to take place in Ireland, Iceland, Hungary and New Zealand.

A third evidence session was held in December with a panel of witnesses who have experience in drafting constitutions for the UK, and an academic with extensive knowledge of the constitution in the UK and European Union. The fourth evidence session in January examined the historical context of the UK’s constitution.

Further evidence sessions will be announced in due course.

In May 2012, the Committee published a paper from the Centre for Political and Constitutional Studies, Kings College London, on The Existing Constituiton, as part of this inquiry.
