The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee has written to the Foreign Secretary ( PDF 1.16 MB) to the Foreign Secretary to ask him to clarify whether the UK agrees with the US policy of doing “whatever is necessary” to prevent Iran having nuclear weapons.
The letter notes that establishing whether Iran has the capacity or intention to weaponize will be a key concern in determining what further action to take, and asks the Foreign Secretary to set out the UK Government’s view on when Iran would have “crossed the line”. The Committee considers it important to seek further information from the Government in view of the growing consensus that 2013 will be the year in which the current deadlock over Iran’s programme will, one way or another, be broken.
The Committee took evidence (PDF 158 KB) from experts on Iran’s nuclear policy in February and met the International Atomic Energy Authority and Permanent Representatives to the IAEA in Vienna in March.
