This was the third session of the Committee’s inquiry into the role and future of the Commonwealth. The main focus was on the benefits of the existence of the Commonwealth to the UK and any reforms needed.

This was the Committee's second evidence session as part of the inquiry The role and future of the Commonwealth. This session gave a general overview of the Commonwealth; future sessions will focus particularly on the Commonwealth's benefits to the UK and any reforms the Commonwealth should undertake.

Witness: Senator Hugh Segal, Canadian Special Envoy for Commonwealth Renewal

This was the first evidence session for the Committee's inquiry into The role and future of the Commonwealth. Senator Segal was a member of the Eminent Persons Group which put forward proposals for reform to the recent Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth. Following the CHOGM, Senator Segal has been appointed as Canada’s Special Envoy, to make the case for reform of the Commonwealth.
