Ministers questioned on progress in Embedding Sustainable Development in Government

01 March 2013

The Environmental Audit Committee will hold a public evidence hearing on progress in embedding sustainable development in Government, at 1.30 pm on Wednesday 6 March in the Thatcher Room, Portcullis House

Witnesses

  • Rt Hon Owen Paterson MP, Secretary of State at Defra
  • Rt Hon Oliver Letwin MP, Minister for Government Policy, Cabinet Office
  • Nigel Atkinson, Head of sustainable development, Defra

The session will examine the Ministers’ role in embedding sustainable development in government departments, following up a similar hearing last July. It will examine their role in reviewing departments’ business plans; developments in sustainability/emissions reporting by departments and private sector companies; departments’ compliance with environmental appraisal methodologies; departments’ performance against ‘Greening Government Commitment’ targets and their sustainable procurement responsibilities. The National Audit Office has published two briefs to assist the Committee — on sustainability reporting and sustainable procurement — which the NAO has previously published:

  • NAO briefing: Sustainable procurement in government
  • NAO briefing: Sustainability reporting in government
