It was hoped that the successes of Team GB’s female athletes in the Olympics last year would result in greater prominence for women’s sporting achievements and encourage more girls and women to participate in sport. However, it appears that women’s sport still faces a number of disadvantages compared with sport for men.

The Culture, Media and Sport Committee has decided to investigate what barriers remain to women’s participation in sport and how to overcome these, focusing on:

• Availability of facilities for training and playing sport, for both girls and women, at both elite and grassroots levels;
• Finance, including sponsorship and prize money;
• Media coverage;
• Reasons why participation in sport by women decreases;
• The variety of sports on offer to girls at school.
