Debate on Liaison Committee report on Select Committee effectiveness, resources and powers

The Backbench Business Committee scheduled a debate on Thursday 31 January relating to the Liaison Committee's report on Select Committee effectiveness, resources and powers. 

The Liaison Committee asked the House to agree a motion endorsing the Committee's report and calls for,

"a new relationship between Parliament and Government, which recognises the public interest in greater accountability."

Sir Alan Beith, Chair of the Liaison Committee, and Mr Bernard Jenkin appeared before the Backbench Business Committee to request this debate.

The Government's response to the Liaison Committee report on Select Committee effectiveness, resources and powers was published on 24 January.

How the subject was selected

The subject for this debate was determined by the Backbench Business Committee following representations by Sir Alan Beith and Mr Bernard Jenkin at the public meeting on 22 January 2013.

Stephen Williams made his representation for the debate at the meeting on 23rd October 2012.

Backbench Business Committee

The Backbench Business Committee meets weekly on Tuesdays at 3pm to consider requests for debates from any backbench Members of Parliament on any subject.

The Committee then has to decide how to allocate the limited Parliamentary time it has at its disposal. The Committee's meetings are always conducted in public and can be watched on Parliament TV.
