Sandwich Student Placement

The House of Lords Sandwich Student Placement Scheme 2010-11 is now open.

The House of Lords has a vacancy for one placement student in the academic year 2010/11 as part of a University sandwich degree.  The placement scheme should enable the student to build upon knowledge acquired during his/her studies, provide the student with the opportunity to apply any skills they possess to the workplace and to learn more about the House of Lords and Parliament in general.

BACKGROUND

The sandwich student/industrial placement scheme lasts approximately 40 weeks from when the House of Lords reassembles following the summer recess (usually early October) until the end of July the following year. 

The post holder reports to the Sandwich Student Placement Co-ordinator in the Human Resources Office.

As the placement scheme involves moving the student between different offices the student can expect to experience the wide range of work carried out within the House of Lords administration. In previous years placements have been provided by the following offices: Clerk of the Parliaments Office, Hansard, Black Rod's Department, Facilities Department, Journal and Information Office, Parliamentary Archives Office, Committee Office, Legislation Office and the Library. The placements are of varying length in each office. The student's programme will vary from year to year depending on what work is available and is organised on a term by term basis by the Sandwich Student Placement Co-ordinator.

DUTIES:

The work will generally be administrative based and may include: research, short project work, computer/database work, typing, correspondence, responding to enquires, record keeping and filing.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES

The successful applicant will be:

• Studying for a politics, business, public administration or similar subject degree for which completion of a one year work placement within a relevant industry is required;

• Able to show that they are making satisfactory progress with their degree course;

• A good communicator with strong oral and written skills;

• Able to organise and prioritise their workload and manage their time effectively;

• Interested in the workings of the House of Lords and Parliament in general but able to conduct themselves discretely and with political impartiality;

• Able to work in a team and deal confidently, effectively, and politely with people from a variety of backgrounds including members of the House of Lords;

• Good with IT, including knowledge and experience of MS Word and Excel.

• Required to exercise initiative and possess a flexible attitude to work.

SALARY AND ALLOWANCES ETC

The salary is £14,220 per annum (reviewed in April).

HOURS

Conditioned hours are 41 per week gross. 

ANNUAL LEAVE

Annual leave entitlement for permanent staff is six weeks pro rata.  The student will be allowed the relevant proportion of the holiday allowance. Leave must be taken when the House is not sitting (during recess).
