By researching the records of Sunderland Corporation our group were able to find out about how the local administration was trying to improve public health in Sunderland from the 1830s onwards.

This included drawing up comprehensive By-Laws and creating Sunderland Improvement Bills to try and obtain Parliamentary powers to carry out various works. Find out more by visiting the pages below.

1847 Sunderland Improvement Bill

In 1847, Sunderland’s local authorities attempted to pass an Improvement Act. This would have given extensive powers to improve conditions in Sunderland.

The 1848 Public Health Act

The 1848 Public Health Act was the first step on the road to improved public health.
