The Act of Settlement is still in force today and Catholics are still barred from taking the throne of the United Kingdom.
In 2009 Evan Harris MP unsuccessfully introduced a Private Member's Bill into Parliament aimed at removing this bar, which also aimed to allow first-born female succession to the throne. After this, the Prime Minister Gordon Brown discussed the issue with Buckingham Palace.
