The cast iron roofs are a rare example of their kind, and are part of the Grade I Listed fabric of the Palace. Continued major restoration works on the cast-iron roofs is needed to ensure the Palace is watertight and prevent further damage to the integrity of the building. The cast iron plates or tiles will be removed, taken away for off-site cleaning and repair, and then protected with a weatherproof coating. Similarly, the iron trusses which support the plates will be cleaned and repaired before reinstatement of the roof. It is intended that most of the historic roof will be retained, with minimal replacement.
